It is the late 15th century and a new age is dawning. While searching for a new trade route to India, explorers have discovered a new land. The first reports tell of strange creatures, exotic people, and fabulous wealth. Captains and adventurers flock to these new lands in search of gold. They are quickly followed by colonists, soldiers, merchants, and missionaries all seeking wealth of one kind or another. Colonies begin to spring up, and soon competition among the great nations of Europe begins.
Take the role of one of Europeâs colonial powers and stake your claim in the New World. As the leader of your nation, there are many paths that lead to victory: Discover and colonize new lands; acquire trade goods that will build your economy; develop new technologies and infrastructure in your home country; build your merchant fleet to dominate the trade routes; and build your army to defend what is rightfully yours!
The triumphant revel in riches and glory, while the vanquished become a footnote in the history books. It is an Age of Discovery⦠it is an Age of Empires!

It is truly remarkable that 69 won the last contest.

[4] What's the minimum # of players for this game to still be fun? I'm sure more is better [though I'd have to believe that it increases play time exponentially], but I don't have a large circle of gaming friends...

My husband and I play this with just the 2 of us and it is quite fun. Strategy is very different with just 2, but no less fun than when played with more.

Yes, I've heard that you can play this with 2-3 and enjoy it. 4-6 players (6 players requires the purchase of an additional set of pieces) is a very challenging game. The more players there are the tougher the choices become as only a set number of players can choose to take that action each turn.
Great game! Very well balanced....highly recommend.

⢠It just occurred to me that not only is Bottom Feeder free, you also get 1 Tanga Point just for entering!

Yes, such a low number (69) to take the last one. It plays with my brain.

I just got this game from my BGG Secret Santa. It looks fantastic! I can't wait to play it.
[6] From everything I've read, it works very well from 2-6 players. Here's a summary of what people on BGG say about different numbers of players:
2-3 players: Low competition for resources. Each player can follow his/her own strategy. Likely to involve more 'take that' plays, because each VP you deny your opponent is like getting one for yourself (especially in 2-player).
4 players: A blend of initial strategy and in-game tactical play. You won't always be able to get exactly what you need for your initial strategy, so you'll need to track the flow of the game and adjust your strategy as necessary.
5 players: More competition for resources, with multiple players likely pursuing similar strategies. A player can get locked out of the Trade Goods action, as there are only four spots. Tight, competitive games.
6 players: Maximum competition for scarce resources. Players can get locked out of Capitol Buildings and Specialists, in addition to Trade Goods. Must really pay attention to what others are doing and be very flexible with your strategy.
Now, if I can just get this to the table...

[15] Just a heads up: AOEIII the boardgame is like the computer games in theme only. It's a pure Euro-style game (think Puerto Rico/Caylus). Warfare is an available action, but it's deterministic, and is just used to alter the majority control balance in the new world colonies. From what I've read, warfare is typically used sparingly.

Yeah, I'm the only one who uses warfare in this game. Not a winning strategy yet, but it gets everyone else scared.
