Wow, I finally got the a-ha moment after I completed the entire puzzle. Really funny though

Got them, but can't figure out the topic.

[1] Can't get top across...I hope that doesn't mean all my answers are wrong.

Edit: Got it, just couldn't remember it apparently.

OK... I still don't get the theme, and "Australia" doesn't fit in the boxes...

Took me a loooong time to figure out the theme with this one. Not at all in my sphere of interests. And it took me many minutes to figure out why Australia isn't Australia (technically, the entire country is not what the answer is, but people will get it anyway, eventually).

[3] Remember it...

The topic is orthogonal, at best.

When do you want to get a 300? That will help with the Australia one too.

[3] Think San Antonio.

There's some kind of selection thing for these tonight, I think...

[3] I can tell you there's no basement there, that's for sure.

[4] That one makes me hungry for steaks.

[9] Mmmmmm... Steak.... That did it.

I'm stuck on the alligator one....unless of course I have others wrong...any salt?

edit...had a word spelled wrong......got it!

Salt for second to last down? City in lights?

you said it....city in lights....

[11] no you have that one exactly right.

[12] I bet if you think hard enough you can get it

[15] I bet you're right.

Got all the answers but the theme escapes me.....

[9] Steak did it for me as well...Thanks!

Okay. I know one instance when I want to get a 300 (my dad does it professionally). However, as far as I can tell, none of the answers have anything to do with it. If someone would like to message me the theme, I'd be delighted. Thanks!

I answered them all and I have no idea what the theme is.

I wouldn't say "getting a 300" quite fits with the theme, unless I'm missing a newish phrase (I did this for ten years growing up and never heard that phrase).

Anyway, if you can't get the theme, try again on New Year's Day.

Wow... can't believe the topic is that foreign to so many people. I had it after the first across and the longest down. Good timing on this one.

If you can answer them all and not get the theme, do the usual.

Am i the only one who hasn't gotten the Austrailia one with this being rated one star?

Most of the clues were easy enough that I didn't care about the theme, until the Australia one. [8] tipped me off to the theme, then it was cake from there.

Someone told me the theme. It is something I am familiar with, but I don't know what it has to do with 300.

I'm having trouble w/ the alligator and the gem.

just got the theme and the puzzle, thanks to all!

[21] "getting a 300" most definitely has to do with the theme of the puzzle. They are both the same word.

that last clue was just right...

[26] think briefly about he first, then look again at the picture of the second.

[28] NOW I get it. I was thinking of the general activity in the theme, not the specific theme, which then relates to the name of an OTHER activity where getting a 300 is ideal.

I finally solve a Hypercross!!! :D :)

Solved it (with a bit of help from a crossword solver for the Australia clue), but I still don't see the theme.

[edit] plugged a few of the answers together into google, and I see the theme now.

Well, I finally got it, no thanks to the title, which I didn't understand until a good ten minutes after solving.

woo i got it, first hypercross, with a little help from the gf on what that red and green flower was.

Thanks! Your clue led me right down the proper alley!

i have no idea on the long one down, any help

I liked that, and poignant too

I am so lost. I get the theme, I think I have all the answers right. They're spelled right. What am I doing wrong?

The only one I don't have is the white building. Could I get some salt please???

Is there something that isn't obvious?

[37] It's rather popular this time of year.

37 see them during Christmas

Ouch. I count the title a serious red herring. I don't know enough about the actual topic of the puzzle to recognize the entries, so I was thinking that somehow the terms had to do with the 300 activity, rather than what they actually are.

[40] I had some salt, but I can't remember...

got the theme after two answers but it took a second to make the connection to the title. took even longer to get the points, as I apparently don't know how to spell.

Too easy

tis the season...

We made it to the first across this year. "WE ARE....."

Still can't get the croc or the Australia clue... Salt, please?? :)

I got the puzzle...just still can't understand the theme...

blargh.

Maybe I don't participate in that activity enough...the only reason I go to that place is for karaoke.

Touchdown! Finally solved it! [33] was the biggest help of all. You'll still need a few of the answers to get you going. Perhaps the saltiest clue out there!

Oh, and for the record, the theme is a facepalm when you give it a couple seconds to sink in.

Got the theme...

Without giving the theme outright, go get some cereal and pay attention to what you put it in...

Not really an interest for me, so I still don't know what 300 means in relation to it.

The theme is completely misleading. It has to do with something that is radically different than the actual subject except for the fact that at a certain time of year one uses a form of the name of the other. It's a stretch. The answers themselves were easy. I just can't figure out why such an easy puzzle would need such a stretch for a title.

[54] Thank you. And I don't get the theme, either.

Awesome

It's understandable that people aren't seeing the connection, most of these names have been lost to the corporate sponsors.

I'll explain the theme in the BGG thread, since this puzzle's been up for a number of hours already.

[9] One of the greatest movies. Funniest part when they wake him, "What do you remember?" "I remember..." Then they all cheer.

The name of the puzzle isn't that much of a stretch. It's an oft used pun in a particular section of the newspaper during this time of year. Couldn't have been a more appropriate day to run this one.

The only thing that could be better would have been to include the participants. (Oh-oh. Is that the sound of people rushing to their keyboards?)

A winning record could get you in one

Fun puzzle...I agree with the thought that the title was a bit of a stretch...I'd have preferred something more porcine for instance.

After I finally "got" the theme (after I got the puzzle itself), I still think the title is a stretch.

Sure, it equates to the same word, but a word with such disjointed meanings in this context that it doesn't really help with the puzzle at all :)

Maybe everyone here are nerds.(btw I own a life size replica of a certain scoundrel in carbonite) I knew the theme when I read the title on the link. This would be all you hear about in the news today and I am no fan.

The title is a bit of a pun.
