We took a puppy obedience class early on and I continued to read lots of books and do internet research. Training is hard but definitely rewarding - it can be fun to teach them tricks too!
As far as training suggestions, I if your puppy isn't crate trained, and you have that option, to do so. It's not only nice to have a place for you to "send" the dog, but also for them to have someplace that is all their own.
And definitely go for an obedience class. You can get a recommendation from your vet or from friends who have well-behaved dogs.
Her name is Elly. She was a rescue when she was 6 months old. Being a pit bull, she's lucky to have made it out of the shelter alive since most of the shelters seem to think they are ALL blood thirsty maniacs. She's so sweet.
We took her to a drop-in dog obedience class once a week for a long time. The key is to be consistent. Our trainer also said many times that the obedience classes are more "people training" than "dog training". You need to learn how to read the animal and act accordingly.
would have thought there would be a star wars character in this blog...
Calvado, my first real dog (as opposed to dogs my parents had, which were also still mine, but, well... you get the idea)
Yes, that's a Labrador afraid of the water. (though we eventually turned that around, and now he's CRAZY for the pool)
Puppy training: a MUST.
Your first choice should be some cool, local place. Ask around, check the 'net, etc.
Barring that, PetSmart is actually pretty good. Their trainers do 100% positive reinforcement, and are accredited as such.
On the other hand, unless things have changed in the last few years, PetCo training is pretty bad, and should be avoided.
Oh, and Go, Dodgers!
First off wanting to say you're little girl is beautiful. Is she a miniature or full size dach ?
That particular breed has stolen my heart. My girlfriend and I have a total of 5 dogs, of which the most spoiled is our 2 year old miniature dachshund named Smeagol. (The name was completely my girlfriend's idea :D ) Here is a little of what we have learned so far.
1. As others have said, definitely take her to at least the basic training class. This will not only give her the basic ideas of who is in charge, but will get her comfortable with other dogs.
2. Socialize, Socialize, Socialize. Try to take her everywhere to get her comfortable not only with other dogs but with other people. Usually you won't get stopped in a store without groceries due to "health hazards".
3. One of the quirks of a dachshund, they are EXTREMELY stubborn. The have a little mind of their own. Fetch? Well he knows to go get the ball and take it to his spot to chew for a while. Sit? As long as its not on hardwood flooring / tiles, his butt gets cold. He has to have a rug to sit on. This was something told to us by the Petsmart trainer that was common with the ones he's trained.
4. Enjoy. All the dach's I have been around all think they are human and have a great little personality. Just enjoy all the little moments she'll provide for you
Those are some great looking dogs! Thanks everyone for posting!
@Arnott, pet training was a definite first on the agenda. She is now in the intermediate class at PetSmart and she is doing fairly well, but as mojoli pointed out - dachshunds are stubborn.
How did you get Calvado to be not afraid of the water? Lily is afraid of the water. Which is sort of a pain when I want to take her for a walk over here in Seattle :D
@scoutmom, yep I went with the crate training approach and after a few weeks she finally accepted it as her safe place! Although, at times I feel like I should give her more space to play when I leave....
@mojoli, she is a miniature and at 6 months she is still on the mini side (almost 7 pounds now). And yes, she has quite the personality!
I have been trying to socialize her as much as possible. She seems to be getting better, although, she is still pretty shy when it comes to meeting new dogs and/or people on walks or at the dog park. However, once she 'accepts' the new dog and/or person she is very playful. Any suggestions? My guess is to just keep on introducing her to more people and dogs...
You hit the nail on the head with your number 3! She is very very stubborn and your description of fetch/sitting describes Lily perfectly! Although she will sometimes do it when there is a treat involved :D
You should post some pics of your dogs! Especially Smeagol ;)
Two labs here... 95 lbs each. Great dogs! Do I just use HTML to post pictures in here?

Now that the weather is finally shaping up in Seattle, I have been taking my new friend to the dog park and having fun in the sun. My dog is a 5 month old blue dapple Dachshund named Lily. Anybody else have a dog? Post pics!
Also, let me know if you have any training suggestions! This is my first dog (didnât have one growing up) and I have been learning along the way.
