So many clues to the correct answer. The theater setting is a ;ittle missleading but the text and the screen image tells the tale. It truly is right under your nose.
Finally understood the arrow/number clue. But I have no idea what the background image has to do with the solution. At least the AHA! moment was relatively salt-free.
I'm really not sure how I got it. I thought I understood the arrows and numbers. It got me the first 3 letters, but I can't get the rest of the answer that way.
EDIT: Duh. I had the arrow/number thing wrong... I just happened to get something close enough to work! Got it now.
Rough. Got excited when I first saw this puzzle. Thought it was going to be a real dandy. Background could have been anything however. The theater doesn't really make any sense.
Got it in nine minutes, but spent most of that time staring at it trying to figure out the "key" clue. This is quite similar to a very early Tanga puzzle, but I didn't recognize it for a while.
Well done! Solvable, salt-free, and research-free!
I solved it, but I don't get it (a post upthread gave it away for me). I've never been so clued out about a puzzle for which I've provided a correct solution!

philtrum is right under your nose literally - the bit between your lips and your nose, with the small cleft...
[edit] from wiki: The philtrum (Greek philtron, from philein, "to love; to kiss") is the vertical groove in the upper lip, formed where the nasomedial and maxillary processes meet during embryonic development."
That's what's beneath your nose but it has nothing to do with this puzzle (and it isn't what the clue is referring to). Don't take the garden path that I did thinking that it was saying "filter 'em"...
I'm glad people are enjoying the puzzle.
The reason for the background picture is a subtle clue pointing towards the similarity in the arangement of the seats in a theater relative to one another and .....
[42]That sort of makes sense, interhawk. But I remain puzzled by this puzzle, despite having "solved" it. Can't make head or tail of the numbers, the arrows, or the screen. And I think I'm only half getting the clue at the bottom. Given the fact I know the answer this makes me teh suxxor!
# It took you 11 minutes and 14 seconds to solve this puzzle.

One of my better times, probably. >_>
For most of the 11 minutes I thought the arrows meant one thing, when they actually meant another. Once I gave up on my original thought and tried something else it came pretty quickly.
I figured out the main trick and the meaning of the arrows, but I originally read the letters in the wrong order - I wrote down the entire left side first, then the right side. But at a glance, I could anagram the letters to the actual answer, and then in retrospect figured out in what order they were supposed to have been read.
It's a neat coincidence (at least I"m assuming it's a coincidence) that the particular word chosen as the final answer can be formed using this particular solving method.
i just FINALLY put in an answer that occured to me 12 hours ago. TWELVE HOURS AGO! and it was the right answer. but i thought, lo those many hours ago, "THIS can't be the answer. THIS isn't right under my nose. Maybe if I was solving this puzzle back in 1976 it would be, but certainly most people looking at this puzzle on their computers don't even HAVE one of these, let alone keep it under their nose.
argh. nice puzzle, but totally misleading clue. it would've been more accurate to say "the key probably ISN'T right under your nose, because you live in the 21st century."
Sheesh! It took me long enough. Awfully salty there, maluba.
Once I got that hint, backsolving it was a piece of cake! I was close for a mighty long time--I just couldn't figure out what to do with the arrows (nice clue, though!).
I don't like it. I figured out the "key" on my first guess, but it wasn't very clear what to do with it. The fact that the numbers are so jumbled is confusing, as well as the fact that the arrows point toward them instead of away from them. I don't know if I ever would have figured that out without looking at the solution. According to the official solution, there's a lot of random noise, but not enough of the necessary information.

I don't know how long I spent staring at things under my nose, trying to make sense of them.
...no, I take that back. It was 27 minutes and 18 seconds (with a few breaks here and there for getting my mind off things for a bit).
(And every time I see a puzzle like this, I try not to think about the New World Symphony.)
