If you were buying these as "generic" they wouldn't be called this, but if you were talking about them in generic terms you would probably use these words.
Edit: I think it came easily to me because I have been dealing with another version of this lately and have been reading up.
Would have been cute in a naughty way to include one of the more surprising now-generic brand names, "heroin"...once a brand owned by the Bayer company! I hear it was a quite effective painkiller, that got really good repeat business.
I think 4 is probably too hard ("communicative" is not a word that comes to mind... how about "repositional hued reminder paper"), but the beauty of the puzzle is that it's solvable with a few clues missing.
Last step was very rough....clue seems to indicate a person or persons, when the answer is really a thing. I would had the answered it 15 hours ago if it were in the correct form.

got a bunch, but no clue yet to the rest!...I think some must be wrong, it doesn't really work as a word just yet.

Think "Generic Words" or Genericized words... all should be familiar terms.

Ah! Thanks Rocketeer! [6] tells me which ones were wrong. Always nice to know.
So I'm missing #4, 7, 11, and 12.

How many words are made with the clues once you figure them all out. Or is it one 12 letter word?

[10] It looks like at least two words to me, but I haven't solved yet so I may be mistaken.
Dang, gotta go now, will finish later. I feel so close too!

Took a while.
Some of the clues are pretty weak, but the answer wraps it up nicely.
Thanks for the effort, Rocketeer.
I could use a quiescently frozen non-dairy confection now.

OK, back. Have two words. But...what do they mean?
Ah, the magic "post and then it pops into your head" system worked for me tonight! Nice puzzle.

Nope, not seeing it. I have all but two of them, but I must have some early ones wrong because it ain't making words. :)

I have 2 words, but the light bulb is not lighting up for me tonight. Here's hoping a good night's sleep will lead to a revelation.
Ding! Had the next to last letter wrong.

Over all.. not bad. Some funny... some weak. But I disagree with the line drawn in the final step. That is not really what it is.

Got it at #100! Woo! Not bad considering how late it is. I'll take my 11 points and be happy.
Gonna go do some xeroxing.

The sixth is rather odd, since its use in English dates back to 1798. (Threw me for a while; I thought the answer was "pogo stick".)

#4 used to come only in yellow.
#5 is older than vinyl.
