Is it already night where you are?
A subtle backgound could have enhanced this puzzle greatly! Without such, there are just too many other answers that are equally (or perhaps even more) valid.

Even with the salt in [1], I'm not getting it. I've come up with at least 2 dozen answers that should have worked, but didn't.

I really don't understand how this means that. Why is <omitted> supposedly <omitted>? What is the black for? Why do the numbers stop at 49?
