[9] I've tried four variations (using the abbreviated first word and the unabbreviated first word versions, and swapping words 3 and 4). Still no joy.

First word's got an extra little something at the end... THAT'S what was tripping me up.
EDIT - just googled the mispelled phrase and found some interesting results. Perhaps it's more frequently seen as in the puzzle than I'd thought. Hm.

Yes, the wording of the puzzle answer is a little odd, as most people are used to it being slightly different. But I went with the traditional verbiage, just to be tricky.
