So it took me a minute, and not to make anyone feel old, but I had to recall the class I took entitled "The 60's In America" yup, for credit. You lived it, I read it...
edit - Uhm, I was referring the a group of the pictured type of people that had a heyday in San Fran... wow I can't believe I over analyzed that...

Although the word "dude" has been around since the 1800's, it didn't become part of mainstream linguistics until the 1980's NOT the 60's or the 70's.
