My sympathies to CWarrior on the decision to change the puzzle, but I think this was in fact made more pleasant with the word list. (And it is, in fact, a great game.)
If you'd like to try it online for free ... http://games.asobrain.com. Their version of the game is called Toulouse, but it is otherwise the same game.
Regarding the cast, I agree with the mods. I have Carc but stopped buying expansions; the last one I got was either King & Scout or Builders & Traders, but I've read about Fairy & the Dragon. I'm a BGG user, but I don't follow Carcassonne, so 3 of these were completely new to me. As such, I probably would have had to hit BGG to solve this one, especially since I didn't know one of the pieces was called that. I call him "the big guy" because that's how he was explained to me, and that's how I explain him now.
The reason I stopped buying expansions is that Carc doesn't get much play anymore. Most of my friends are not gamers, and an all-expansions game is a bit much for them. The ones whose eyes don't glaze over by the time I introduce the 10th piece/role don't like Carc as much as other games.
As a non-gamer, I REALLY appreciated the list. I'm glad the mods realize that not everyone is as intimately knowledgeable about all games as CWarrior is.
I think it's funny that the list in the puzzle is here is being praised, but the same idea got mostly negative feedback on a recent hypercross (http://www.tanga.com/crossword_puzzles/710-9-23...), especially when the key was much more necessary on the HC.
[12] I think that's because you had to type in all of those words that were nearly impossible to spell correctly based just on the clues, and jump back and forth to that clue (or print it out) to do so.
[12] I agree with the comments that the key was necessary for that hypercross as spelling would be difficult without it. Trouble is having a key allows you to solve the puzzle by fitting length of words or intersecting letters, which takes something away from the problem. Damned if you, damned if you don't, making puzzles ain't easy.

That was somewhat difficult for someone like me who has never played Carcassonne...

The list did make a difference. Thanks for adding it.

[1] Well, it is a primer on the game. The list is there for those who've never played.

[4] Thanks for the primer - I've (embarrassingly?) never even heard of the game!

Awesome theme! The answer should have been "meeple".

[1] I haven't seen over half of those pieces before, but it's still deducible through the key if you can guess the methodology.

EDIT
Sorry, I had a nasty comment but decided to remove it. I'm trying to be nicer to the puzzle makers. :)
