...now that I look again, the punctuation appears, faintly, in the background, where it's easy to miss. (I certainly missed it.) I think without (a) much clearer cluing that it was needed or (b) some indication that this is a quote, probably including its source, that this puzzle is seriously flawed.

Yeah, the punctuation should probably be included more explicitly in the image. Otherwise it was a fun puzzle.
Interesting: when I "select" the image in Firefox the punctuation is visible. but not in IE

The phantom punctuation in the background could have been more obvious. I added it just because the answer wasn't working, and noticed it floating there afterwards.

This is my first puzzle. Sorry to all of you punctuation haters - I figured that the puzzle was so easy that it needed a little twist.
