NM, I never believed in the post and solve theory but it actually worked. I have been thinking about this one since it came up last night and it just hit me when I posted that. I feel stupid and will openly admit I was holding my laptop up to a mirror in case I was missing something.

Got it without NaCl after coming back to look first.
I went "**** ** ****** ***" and completed the puzzle.
yes, this is (hopefully) useless salt. but there are 345 other solvers so it certainly should be useless by now...
