That would have been a better puzzle if the lighting on the pictures of the writing implements didn't suck. A couple of those lost defining features in the shadows.
Wow--this seems an incredibly hard one to research. (Got it with 1, 2, 5, and a crossword solver; not even sure how to go about finding the others, short of going down to Staples or the like.)

Shouldn't the number under the blue pen be a 3?

[3]...triple checking it in my head leads me to believe that 2 is correct

[2] Your salt was needed - I'm not American, but I still can't get it...

[3] Nope. I've got one of those right here, and the number in the puzzle flies just fine.

Okay, I stand corrected. The one in my pen collection has the name worn off, but I thought I knew what it was.
I also found that exact same mechanical pencil in my pen bucket, but again, name worn off. Maybe I'm too rough on my pens.

I got the "hard" one... now am stuck on this one. Anyone still looking? Salt?

I'm pretty sure this was a digital photograph taken from pens that the author had lying around at work.
I suppose that would kind of make it hard to find images on the web since these were not cut and pasted from the internet.
Nice puzzle though...easy.

I'm really not interested in researching the names of random pens. Sorry, but I'll pass on this one.
Edit: I'm a loser and did it anyway.

[17] I also had the same ones, thank you for the tip that helped me find the salt-shaker!

Not very salty, but the Staples Office Supply Catalog here at work was invaluable. :)
And, yes, I'm pretty sure the 4th writing implement should have the number 3 underneath it, even though they didn't have it in the catalog.

[21] 2 is correct. Some salt for the 4th writing utensil since it has caused some confusion: "even an Aviator could use it"
