They came in pretty good shape, with the exception of one of the antennas plastic coating was split, so it wouldn't tighten up, I removed the plastic and it works just fine.

To upgrade it to a full ASUS firmware required downgrading to an older T-Mobile firmware, watching an hour-long YouTube video, which thankfully provided links to useful files, to follow step-by-step and using a Hex editor, but finally worked. Putting on a non-ASUS firmware required unboxing an old Win7 laptop (because Win8+ has an issue with pushing firmware via ASUS' recovery tool). However, I got Brainslayer DD-WRT on there. Now I am going to forge on with ASUSWRT-Merlin (basically, ASUSWRT with some fixes and a few other useful tweaks): so you don't lose any hardware acceleration. I wish I had bought two of them when they were at their lowest price: one would make a great gift.
